Insta-Worthy? Traveling for the Gram

February 4, 2020

This is a thing.  In fact, it is a very big thing.  Instagram has changed the way we think about living life.  Even if you're not on Instagram, or any social media, you've probably been affected by it.

When I first joined Instagram, I mostly posted photos of my friends and I hanging out, or sharing my life in Colombia.  I have a love/hate relationship with social media.  I love looking at photos, I hate looking at photos that make me suddenly compare my life to the photos.

I had to do a lot of inner work to come to a healthy relationship with social media.  The biggest lesson was to never compare myself to another, and to recognize the message being sent to me, and how I was receiving it.

I also learned the tough lesson of oversharing and honoring my privacy.  I shared some things online, I wish hadn't.  It's done.  I can't delete it all.  The internet houses things forever.

I guess the only chance I have of deleting it all, is the internet just disappearing one day... hmm, I wonder what life would be like if it all just vanished?

I wouldn't know certain places existed, unless someone shared their experience with me.  So, it doesn't change much.  Just the medium being used and the potential audience reached.

Instead of magazines and stories from relatives, Instagram inspires us to explore new places and get exciting photos.

To keep it healthy, I ask myself why I want to see this place, why I want to share it with others, and never compare.

I think it is awesome we can share our adventures with the world and open doors for those who haven't had the opportunities.  It's also a huge opportunity for smaller towns and lesser known places, to get tourism money.  Just by adding a cool mural, you can start to bring in tourists.

With that being said, it is super important to be mindful while traveling.  Honoring the local customs, respecting the space, and being aware of how travel affects the earth.

When I know better, I do better.  At least, that's the goal.
